Jan. 29, 2001: Move over, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon!

January 9, 2001 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Stand back, Tony Randall and Jack Klugman! Make way for America’s newest Odd Couple, Sam Nunn and Ted Turner! Nunn and Turner. Turner and Nunn. Either way you say it, it boggles the mind to think of these two on the same planet, let alone working together. Sam Nunn, former senior senator from Georgia, is one of the finest men to ever walk the halls of Congress. Ted … [Read more...] about Jan. 29, 2001: Move over, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon!

Jan. 8, 2001: It was not my alma mater’s finest hour.

January 8, 2001 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Forty years ago this month, two young people who wanted to attend the University of Georgia along with other high school seniors in the state, were forced to go to federal court to gain admission. The two students were eminently qualified except for one extenuating circumstance. Both were black. As federal judge William A. Bootle so aptly stated in ordering their admission, … [Read more...] about Jan. 8, 2001: It was not my alma mater’s finest hour.

Well, boys, it looks like we made it to the new millennium. The last time we did this was a thousand years ago, and if the planet doesn't self-destruct in the meantime, it will be another thousand years before we do it again. You are fortunate to have lived through a change of centuries and then to have witnessed the start of a new millennium. When you think about all the … [Read more...] about January 1, 2001: To Brian and Thomas Yarbrough; Zachary and Nicholas Wansley:

December 28, 2000: Random Thoughts on Random Subjects

December 28, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Don’t look now, but the New Year is here. I had a feeling it was coming and, as is my custom, I made ready with a primordial ritual of devouring all the corn-fried shrimp the exquisite little Georgia Sea Grill on St. Simons Island could muster.  It is a solemn and sacred ceremony, heavy with symbolism and tartar sauce. I had many observations to make before Y2K pulled out of … [Read more...] about December 28, 2000: Random Thoughts on Random Subjects

December 21, 2000: Good Luck to President-Elect George W. Bush

December 21, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Honorable George W. Bush President-Elect of the United States Congratulations on your election as the 43rd president of the United States.  I know you are glad to have this ordeal behind you.  The rest of us are, too. Because you barely squeaked by Al Gore, the assumption is that our nation is deeply divided.  It isn’t.  We found that our democracy works well and we are … [Read more...] about December 21, 2000: Good Luck to President-Elect George W. Dicktations: Here’s What I’m Thinking

State Sen.Steve Gooch, R-Dahlonega, has announced he is running for lieutenant governor.  Gooch is the guy who said that approving permits to strip-mine the Okefenokee for titanium dioxide to manufacture, among other things, toothpaste whitener is not a legislative matter.  It is up to the bureaucrats to decide. This, despite overwhelming opposition from Georgians across the state.  File that away and remember it when it comes time to vote.  I know I will. … [Read More...] about A long memory

Yarbrough received over 1,000 email responses last year – both positive and negative. Though most of the emails he receives support his viewpoints, one thing is for sure: Dick Yarbrough’s column speaks to people and they respond. Here is a sampling of email responses Yarbrough has received in the past:

  • Thanks for writing what we all are thinking.
  • I am annoyed by anybody who presumes to know what Georgians think.  And that, sir, includes you.
